CH 7 | TWISTED FATE

Mega meets Jordyn’s bold mom before their wild, drama-filled night—where exes, secrets, and surprises turn everything upside down.

When the front door swung open, Mega expected to see his beautiful date for the night. Instead, he saw an old, fragile woman wearing a housecoat and pink bunny slippers, waving her hands for him to roll down his window.

“She wants you to come in for a second!" Pauline hollered. "She’s not finished getting dressed.”

He wasn’t happy about having to go inside because he didn’t want to risk getting anything on his suit. Mega was spiffy like that. A real pretty boy who hated getting dirty. Unless getting dirty was bringing him pleasure or money.

“Hey, how you doing?” He greeted Pauline as he stepped inside.

“I’m good, how are you?”

“Same as you.”

“Alright now," Pauline tapped the back of his shoulder as he walked past. "Get on in here and have a seat, young man. Jordyn should be down in a minute."

As expected, Mega was hit with a major stare down. He didn’t mind it too much. If his daughter had a nigga coming to pick her up, he would have been the same way. She probably wouldn’t have even been allowed to date knowing him. No matter how old she was.

“You a sharp young man, I give you that. But what are your intentions with my daughter tonight?”

“Just having a good time.” He shrugged. “She’s in good hands with me. I’ll take care of her.”

“What you mean, take care of her?”

“Like...make sure she has a good time and gets home safe?”

Pauline checked him out from head to toe. Even though she gave him a bit of a hard time, she liked what she saw in Mega. A hell of a lot more than she liked Polo.

“Mhm. What’d you say your name was?” she asked.

“You never asked me," Mega replied.

“Well, what is it?”

“Mega. What’s yours?”

“I’m Pauline.”

“Nice to meet you.” He said, sarcasm flooding his voice.

“Likewise. You live around the neighborhood?”

“Nah. I'm on South Beach."

“South Beach? What, you got rich parents or something?”

“You gotta have rich parents to live on the beach?”

Mega reminded Pauline of herself when she was his age. Not only was she a beauty queen during her prime years, but she was sharp and as sarcastic as ever. Her quick wit and slick comments made her a good deal of friends, but it also brought a lot of enemies.

“Not necessarily," she shifted in her recliner. "You either have rich parents or you’re pushing drugs, and I don’t want my daughter around that.”

“She won’t be.”

Pauline didn’t know whether to take his comment as him saying he wasn’t a drug dealer or he was a drug dealer, but wouldn’t have her daughter around the drugs.

“You know what,” she sat back in her chair and fired up a joint, “I like you. Something about your energy speaks to me. You smoke?”

“Sometimes.” Mega smiled. “What you doing smoking?”

“It helps with the pain. Cancer.”

“Aw man, I’m sorry to hear that.”

He felt a sense of sadness come over him. Of course, for Pauline, but more so for Jordyn. He couldn’t imagine going through life knowing that his mom could drop dead at any given moment and he would never see her again.

“Don’t be," she waved him off. "I lived a decent life. Just take care of my baby should y’all decide to give each other a try. And if y’all don’t, do me a favor?”

Mega sat forward when she gave him a real serious look. He'd met a few moms in his lifetime, but none had ever asked him for a favor on the first meet and greet.

“What’s up?” he asked, waiting in suspense.

“Look out for her. Keep her away from that crazy boyfriend of hers. That's one guy I don't trust as far as I can throw anything."

“I’ll do my best.” He laughed.

Jordyn heard her mom tell him that and wanted to flip out on her, but something about the way Mega answered shifted her focus. She wondered what he meant or how he planned on doing that when he knew nothing about her relationship. Yet and still she was intrigued.

“Wow.” He stood up when he saw her in her dress and a full face makeup-beat. “You look good.”

“That’s it? Just good?” Jordyn teased, waiting on him to come correct.

“I’m saying,” he laughed, “your mom’s right here. I almost said something else.”

“Go on and say it!” Pauline chimed in. "I'll run for my pistol so fast."

Mega laughed a hearty laugh as he inched closer to Jordyn, hoping Pauline didn't strike and take him down in the process. “You look amazing. Gorgeous. Fly. All that.”

“Mhm," Jordyn blushed. "Well, I see you and my mom made nice. She's never nice to anyone."

“Yeah, she’s a cool lady.”

“Mhm. You ready? Or y’all wanna finish your conversation?”

“I’m waiting on you, baby.”

“Baby, huh?”

His eyes trailed every inch of her frame, and he nearly drooled at the sight of her.

It had been a long time since a woman made him weak in the knees just by wearing a dress. Mila was a fine gal, but not even she had that kind of pull on him.

“The night is young." He leaned in and kissed her cheek. "We should get going before we miss it."

They didn't even make it to the ball before Jordyn was already feeling like she was on top of the world. Half of her wondered where Mega’s girlfriend was and why he wasn’t taking her to the ball. The other half didn’t give a damn. She wanted him for herself that night, and while she was in his presence, she didn’t plan on letting anything get in the way of that.

“Where’s your girlfriend?”

She couldn’t help herself.

“Where’s your boyfriend?”

“I asked you first.”

“Right here.” He pointed to her sitting in the passenger seat.

“I’m being serious," she playfully slapped his arm.

“So am I.” He replied with a straight face, keeping his focus on the road. “My EX is probably on her way to the ball with her boo."

“So, we’re just gonna have a full on lovers reunion tonight, huh?”

“Nah," Mega chuckled. "That’s not what I’m into. If we’re all done with each other, we should be able to be adults and be cordial. You think?”

“I agree. However, I never really said I was done with Polo.”

Time seemed to come to a halt when Jordyn mentioned Polo. He had already ruined Mega's day earlier that afternoon. So hearing his name again at the last minute felt like a blow to the gut that only an enemy could land.

“Polo?”

“Yeah. That’s the guy I’ve been seeing. You know him?”

“Not personally," Mega shrugged. "That’s the guy Mila was seeing before me.”

“MILA!”

The way she shouted almost made him hit the brakes like they were going the wrong way into oncoming traffic.

“Uhh, yeah.” He side eyed. “You know her?”

“Not personally.” Jordyn folded her arms across her chest, wearing a disgusted look on her face. “She’s the one he can’t seem to leave alone. Are you the same way?”

“Never been. We have a lot of history, but I’m not with the interference. Dude’s been causing hella static between us, and she’s always letting it happen. Like, she tells me she wants nothing to do with him, but somehow he’s always in the picture.”

“Are you sure you’re not just insecure?”

“Maybe.” He shrugged. “I just know what I would and wouldn’t let happen if I was serious about the person I’m trying to kick it with.”

Jordyn kept quiet. The coincidence was too unreal and very hard to grasp. She had never met Mila a day in her life, but somehow, she felt like she knew her because they shared a man.

Mila had broken it off with him, but Jordyn knew they still saw each other on occasions. She didn’t know to what extent, but she had spotted them together a few times and just didn’t know who Mila was. Until she did some digging.

“This is crazy.” She shook her head. "I can't believe this."

“What?”

“This. Us. Mila. Polo. And I don’t wanna sound like a hating ass bitch or anything, but she’s still seeing him. I don’t know what they do or what they talk about when they meet up, but they still meet up. I just didn’t know who she was until a few weeks ago.”

Mega chuckled and nodded his head at the confirmation. No matter how many times Mila said she was done with Polo, he never believed it. And Jordyn let him know he was right to.

“I had a feeling," he said. "She’s always telling me I’m tripping. And wait, if you know he’s seeing another female, why are you still with him?”

“Stupid.”

“I guess we both are.”

When they got to the ball, it was packed. There was a red carpet laid out, valet was in place taking cars, camera crews had the building lit up like the Fourth of July, and everybody was all smiles.

Mega sported his all white Brioni with a diamond studded Hannibal mask, and Jordyn was rocking her ballroom gown, looking lavish and important.

However, when the valet line moved up and it was their turn to hop out and make an appearance, she grew nervous.

She was a good girl. Always in the house with her nose in a book, so to be in a place full of celebrities and bad bitches really took her out of her element. She was afraid she didn’t know how to fit in with the crowd and would make a fool of herself.

“I’m nervous," she admitted.

“Why?” Mega frowned, trying to understand what her problem was.

“I don’t know. I don’t do this kind of shit.”

“Relax.” He smiled at her cuteness. “I got something for you. You just reminded me."

After reaching around in the backseat like he lost something important, he pulled out a Balenciaga box wrapped in a bow, a dozen roses, and a tiara that looked like it came straight from the head of a princess.

“Here. Put these on.”

“Oh my God!” She gasped. “Are you crazy!? How did you even know what size shoe I wore?”

“Don’t worry about all that. Put them on so we can go. We’re holding up the line.”
