CH 6 | JORDYN'S CHOICE

Jordyn risks everything for one night out—with her jealous boyfriend Polo and a new guy, Mega, both planning to be there.

Jordyn and Polo had dated on and off for about a year. In the beginning of their relationship, he treated her like a princess, but after a while, things changed. Her being the supportive and hopeful girlfriend that she was, she thought maybe he was just going through a bad spell. Until she found out that he was actually going through a bad breakup.

If it weren't for the money he gave her to help take care of her mom and bills, she would've dropped him like a bad bag of dope a long time ago. But she was stuck between a rock and a hard place and needed the funds, so she had to do what she had to do.

“I’m going to the white ball tonight. A friend of mine gave me an extra ticket and invited me.” She lied to Polo, hoping he wouldn’t ask too many questions about the ball.

“What friend is this?” he asked.

“Just a girl I work with.”

“Cool. I got invited too, so I’ll see you there.”

Jordyn’s heart started beating a hundred miles a minute. She knew that if Polo saw her partying it up with another man, he would kill her.

“You’re going?” she asked, afraid to sound timid. “I thought you had to work?”

“I did, but I took off. Damn, it sounds like you don’t want me to go. You sure this chick is just a friend?”

“Yeah, I’m not into females.” She laughed nervously. “I just didn’t think you were going. That’s all.”

“I probably won’t stay long. We should leave together if that’s alright with you.” He flirted.

“We’ll see.” She halfway flirted back. “I might not stay long either. You know I don’t like leaving my mom home alone for too long.”

After hanging up with Polo, Jordyn forced herself to call Mega and tell him she wasn’t going anymore. Which pissed her off because she never got to do anything, and whenever she did get the opportunity to go out and enjoy herself, Polo always fucked it up for her.

She didn’t know how Mega would feel if she told him that her boyfriend was going and messed up her plans of going with him. So, she opted out of going altogether.

“So, you leaving me hanging tonight?” He asked, sounding upset.

“Yeah.” She pouted. “I don’t want to. I really wanna go with, I just can’t.”

“Why not?”

She paused, trying to think of a quick lie. Which didn’t come as easily as it did when she talked to Polo.

“I just can’t. Something came up.”

“Which was?”

“You are so pushy! What's your deal?" She felt herself getting turned on.

“I’m not trying to be, I just wanna know what changed your mind.”

“Honestly, my boyfriend called and told me he was going. He was supposed to work tonight, but it turns out he’s going to the ball. I just don’t want any drama, you know?”

“Yeah, I get you. Well, if you still wanna use the ticket, you can. I won't trip.”

“No, I can’t do that to you. I’ll feel bad all night. Won’t even be able to enjoy myself.”

“Nah, for real, it’s cool. We can link up some other time. If you want.”

Listening to him talk put a calm over Jordyn that she had never felt before. He was so genuine and understanding, it made her think about her relationship with Polo and all the bullshit that came with it.

She wasn’t happy. She didn’t see herself having a real future with him because of all the cheating he’d done and still did. However, it was scary to think about leaving him alone and not having the extra help.

After pondering, Jordyn made her decision. She was going. She wasn’t going to answer any calls or texts from Polo while she was there, and if they did happen to run into each other, she would just say that Mega was another friend from work. That was her plan. She hoped it worked out alright. Otherwise, Mega would have just had to be a part of the fight.

“I’m going!" she blurted out. "Fuck it."

“You sure?” A smile slid across his face. “Don’t let me get you in no trouble.”

“I’m sure if he sees us, it’ll be an issue, but whatever. He’s done me dirty a lot, so.” She shrugged.

“Cool. I’ll be on my way to get you in a minute.”

“Ok. Let me finish getting ready.”

With her dress laid out across her bed, waiting to be slid down over her curves, Jordyn sat in front of her mirror doing her makeup. She never really wore makeup, but the white ball was special.

She wanted to be a doll for once. Especially being next to Mega. Yet and still, with all the good thoughts running through her mind, she couldn’t help but think about how things would play out if Polo spotted her with another man.

She didn’t take Mega for a pussy, but she knew how Polo was when he got mad. Straight grimy. And the last thing she wanted to do was put Mega into harm’s way.

She liked him, though. Everything about his energy. The way he dressed. The questions he asked and the way he asked them. How humble he was. Everything.

Most guys hid certain things about themselves when they were trying to get the girl, but she didn’t get that vibe from Mega. He was mysterious and unpredictable but still managed to make himself and his intentions very clear.

“Well, look at you. You going on a date?”

“Hey, Ma.” Jordyn smiled, keeping her focus on her reflection in the mirror. “A friend invited me to the white ball tonight. I’m gonna go hang out with him for a little bit. I won’t be gone too long.”

“A friend, huh? Is it that crazy fool, Polo?”

Her mom, Pauline, hated Polo. After the abusive marriage she had with Jordyn's father, she did her best to make sure her daughter never followed in her footsteps. Everything worked out as she planned for the most part. Until Polo came into the picture.

“Nope. A guy I met at work earlier, and before you ask, we are just friends.”

“As long as it ain’t that one. You know I can’t stand his ass.”

“I know," Jordyn laughed. "Me either sometimes."

“Are you two still together?”

“Yeah, we are. I’m having mixed feelings, though.”

“Good.”

“Ma!” Jordyn rolled her eyes. “He’s an alright dude most of the time.”

“If cheating doesn’t count, I guess so. You deserve more than that, Jordyn. I didn’t raise you to be second best.”

“I know, Ma.”

Her mom sat with her the entire time she finished getting ready. Jordyn knew she wanted to spend as much time with her as possible because she was afraid her cancer would kill her off before she was ready. But she also knew her mom wanted to be nosy.

“You know it’s a dangerous game messing with two men, Baby Girl. Don’t get yourself caught up in no mess.”

“Ma! Relax. Me and Mega are just friends.”

“I hear what you say," Pauline assured. "I just worry about you. That’s all. And I know how Polo gets when you make him mad. I’d hate to have to spend the rest of my days in prison for killing him behind my baby.”

“Well, that won’t ever happen, so don’t worry about it. How does my makeup look?”

Before Pauline could answer, Mega was calling Jordyn’s phone to tell her he was outside.

“Damnit! Ma, can you go to the door and tell him to come inside real quick? Please.”

“Why can’t he wait outside?” Pauline frowned.“I don’t wanna have the man waiting outside in the car, Ma. Just go let him in.”
