CH 18 | SINS OF THE FATHER

A hitman, family secrets, and a deadly love triangle collide when Layton finds out her dad is the man she hired to kill Polo.

While waiting for Jordyn to return with food and giving their clients a break, Mega and Layton discussed what they wanted to do about the price that rested on his head.

Layton had already flown her guy out to the city, just so they were on top of things, but if Mega wanted to go a different route, she was cool with that too. With their hands in the type of pots they had them in, Layton didn’t trust shit. So even though she brought the hitman to Miami, she had eyes on him too.

“You say your man’s already in the city?”

“Yeah. He got here last night, ready for whatever.”

Mega didn’t give a fuck about Polo, but Mila, that was a different story. He didn’t give a fuck about her either, but he wasn’t so sure he wanted her to be dead. Even though she played a major part in setting up the hit on him, he still had love for her somewhere deep inside.

“You still protecting this bitch?” Layton laughed and shook her head. “Why? The girl wants you dead, bruh. The pussy that good? Because you can't be ready to risk your life for this.”

“Nah, dawg, it ain’t got nothing to do with the sex. I don’t even know why I give a fuck. All this shit is just senseless, man, for real. Me and Mila might not be on the best terms, but we got a lot of history. It's hard to look past that."

“You worried about some shit being senseless, but she wants you dead. That’s wild.”

Layton didn't understand the hold Mila had on him. She knew how ruthless Mega could get and how easily it was for him to erase anyone who crossed him. But when it came to Mila, she just didn't get it.

“It is. I agree one hundred percent," Mega sighed. "I don't even know why I'm holding out. She should've been dead the same night I found out."

“So, what we doing? I can’t just have my guy out here wandering around for nothing. He came here ready to smoke something."

Mega thought about it for a moment. If Mila were anyone else, there would have been no conversation to be had. But it was Mila they were talking about.

“Send him back." Mega spoke securely, but there was an unsure look on his face. "I’ll take care of Polo myself.”

“Alright.” Layton shook her head as she picked up her phone to call off the dog. “I’ll send him a message now. But I hope you know what you doing. Because all is fair in love and war."

Mega thought about how he wanted to handle Polo. Did he want to catch him slipping late night? Or run up in his home and hit him up close and personal? Up close and personal was his style when it came to jealous niggas, but he didn’t really know too much about who Polo kept around him. That personal shit could have led up to him getting himself wiped out.

As for Mila, he had a plan for her. She proved to be just as ruthless as he was, so when it was time to put her to bed, Mega wanted to make sure she felt every bit of his rage.

“Yo,” Layton frowned at her phone like she saw something she couldn't unsee. “Look at this shit.”

After handing Mega her phone, she had to take a seat on the couch. She was feeling lightheaded, anxious, and nauseous at the same time. Never in a million years did she think she would've received the type of message that came across her screen. But again, she didn't put shit past anyone.

“What the fuck!”

Mega jumped to his feet, feeling confused and questioning their reality.

“Dawg... I... I don't know what to think right now."

“So,” Mega paused and re-read the message again to make sure he read it right the first time. “The hitman is your dad. And Jordyn is your sister? How? I thought your mom's husband was your dad?”

“So did I," Layton frowned. "Apparently, her ass got some explaining to do. Both of them.”

Confusion raced all around them. Everything Layton thought was the truth about her life started proving to be a lie.

Her mother wasn't her real mother, and her father was a guy she had known for a long time but never knew who he really was. She started to feel like everything was a setup and she couldn't trust anyone. Especially Jordyn.

“So, all this time,” Layton shook her head, trying to process the information. “This man has been working for me and he’s my real dad. And I have a sister that I knew nothing about.”

Mega clamped a hand down on her shoulder to let her know he was there if she needed support. He was just as confused as she was but one thing about it, two things for sure, he would've done whatever he could to help her get the answers she needed.

“You good, bruh?” he asked.

“Yeah. Yeah, I’m good. I'ma take off and go have a talk with this nigga, though. I have to. He knew about me all along and never said a word until now. I need to know why."

“Of course. Whatever you need. I’ll let your client know you had a family emergency."

Layton was nervous about meeting up with the hitman. Usually, everything would’ve been all good. But after finding out that he was her dad, the game changed.

She wondered why he never told her. Or better yet, why her mother never told her. They had a great relationship and shared a lot of personal information with each other, so it was hard for her to believe that her mom kept that secret for so long.

She also wondered how the hell, or who the hell, was going to break the news to Jordyn.

They had been living in the same city for years and never crossed each other’s path. The entire situation seemed like a movie to Layton. She was honestly eager to piece it all together and put it behind her. Along with the Polo and Mila shit.

“I’m back.” Jordyn spoke into the intercom at the front door of the shop.

By the time she got back, Mega had already gotten rid of both clients and cleared out the shop for the day. He knew the minute he told Jordyn what he and Layton had found out about their lives, the weight would be too heavy to continue working.

“Come in here.” He opened the door and took the food from her hands.

“What’s wrong?” Jordyn looked just as confused as he was. “Did something happen?”

“Yes and no.”

Mega closed the door behind her and locked them inside. His trust was at zero and his instincts were screaming at him to lay low. After he sat down and thought about the hitman being Layton's father and Jordyn being her sister, nothing seemed real to him anymore.

“Ok? What the hell is going on here?" Jordyn asked. "Where is everyone?"

“We gotta go," he replied as he cleaned up his station and retrieved a gun from one of his drawers.

Something didn't sit right with him. The hitman may have been Layton’s dad, but something in his gut told him not to trust him. When Mega thought about the hitman trying to kill Pauline all those years ago, he knew there was no telling what he would do to Layton. Especially when it came down to getting paid.

“How much do you know about your dad?” He popped the question as he and Jordyn sped out of the parking lot.

“I mean, he was around for a few years when I was a kid. He was my mom's bodyguard when she was modeling and moving drugs back in Philly. Why?”

“He’s here.”

“I know." Jordyn felt a wave of disgust wash over her. "My best friend told me while I was on the way to get the food. I was gonna tell you when I got back, but how do you know who my dad is?”

Jordyn was more confused than she was intrigued. She hadn't talked to Mega about her father much or shown him what he looked like. So when Mega said that he was in Miami before she told him herself, it was a mystery to Jordyn how he knew.

“We just found out that he's Layton’s dad too," Mega said. "At least, that’s what he told her. She’s on her way to meet him now and I don’t know, man. Something just ain’t sitting right with me.

“Wait. Wait,” Jordyn tried her hardest to wrap her head around what she heard. “What do you mean he’s her dad? So, that’s my sister? “Is that what you’re telling me?”

“Nah, that’s what he’s telling Layton.”

The deeper the reality set in, the more confused both of them became. Mega started to feel like Jordyn was hiding something, and Jordyn started to feel like he was doing the same. Neither of them knew who to trust or where to turn for real answers, so the tension got so thick between them that it sliced through the air like a knife.

“How long has he been here?” Jordyn asked.

“Layton said she flew him in last night. This guy has been on her payroll for years, taking care of some dirty work, but he never mentioned that their ties ran deeper than business."

“No.” Jordyn vigorously shook her head. “That can't be right. Kaylani said he’s been here for a couple of days. Why would he lie about when he got here?”

“I don’t know," Mega sighed. "I gotta get to Layton, though. She ain’t answering her phone now and I don't trust this nigga as far as I can see him."

Jordyn was a nervous wreck. She called her mom to make sure that she was still safe and no one came by. Then she called Kaylani to ask her if she happened to know where the hitman was. But neither of them had heard from him.

She didn’t tell her mom the whole truth because she didn’t want her to start freaking out. She just said she was calling to check in and they would be home soon. But as cautious as Pauline was since the hitman tried to kill her, she knew better than to let her guard all the way down.

“Did Layton say where they were meeting?” Jordyn asked, hoping it was somewhere well lit and full of people.

“Yeah. She did," Mega replied, a lump growing in his throat. "They're meeting at the lake.”
