CH 19 | GHOSTS OF THE PAST

Jordyn and Mega face danger as they unravel secrets, bond over business, and confront family mysteries in a high-stakes drama.

Jordyn knew Mega was upset. His jaw was clenched and his grip on the steering wheel was insanely tight. She wanted to do something to try and calm him down, but she didn’t know what to do. Her own thoughts were all over the place about what her next move would be.

“Where are we going?” she asked, noticing he got off the highway an exit early.

“I gotta make a stop real quick.”

He and Layton had always agreed to keep bond money aside in case either of them needed it, and he felt like he was going to need it. Along with heavy guns and a few hunters. So, instead of going straight to the lake like he had initially planned, he made a pit stop.

“Yo, Big Shaun.” He called his main shooter and put in a request for backup.

“What it do, homie?”

“I need you on the guns. Some shit popped off with Layton and I gotta go get her.”

Big Shaun was a guy Mega met on the road. Their bond was instant and had been tight since the day they met. Shaun was the kind of guy Mega trusted with his life, no questions asked. He took care of him because of it too. Any time he called upon big Shaun to put a motherfucker in the dirt or find out where someone was hiding, the big man was all smiles and ready for action.

“You know I’m there, homie. Just tell me where to meet.”

“I’m headed to the lake now. She's supposed to be meeting up with the nigga who takes care of our dirty work sometimes. I don’t know, homie, I think that nigga dirty himself and trying to set her up."

“The nigga I been telling you about all along, huh? Yeah, he been dirty, dawg. I don’t trust him for shit. I heard some nigga named Polo got a tag on you? What’s that about?”

“Nigga mad about a female so he taking it out on everybody else. This shit with the hitman, though, I don’t know what his problem is. Lay supposed to be his daughter and this is how he does her. I figure it must be money involved. That’s the only way I can see it making sense, him turning on us like that."

Big Shaun had warned Mega a dozen times about the hitman. In their line of work, knocking people off for money, Big Shaun knew who was trustworthy and who was only in it for the dime. He knew the hitman was a cold-blooded killer, and he would kill anybody who stood in his way. Even the ones who put food in his mouth and clothes on his back.

“I'ma load up and head out to the lake," Mega said. "I’ll be at the diner near the entrance. Hit me up when you pulling in.”

“Bet. I got everything we need already in the trunk. I'm on my way."

After a few bent corners, Mega pulled up to a house in a gated community and pulled his Jeep into the garage. Jordyn had no idea whose house it was, but she figured it was Layton’s. Mega didn’t say a word to confirm it either. He just told her to wait for him in the car and he’d be right back.

While she waited, she scrolled through Mila’s Facebook once more to see if she could figure out whose baby she had posted on her page. There wasn’t anything to indicate it was Mega’s, or hers.

There were just pictures of a baby with hearts and simple captions. She was a precious baby girl too. Jordyn hoped like hell that she wasn’t Mega’s baby, but she did favor him.

She didn’t think the baby was his because he’d never mentioned her and he seemed like the type that would be front and center in his child’s life. But Jordyn couldn't be so sure.

“What’s that?” she asked when he returned to the garage with a big black duffle bag.

“Money. And guns. You might see some shit you don’t wanna see tonight, but I’ll go to war about my friend. Call Paulie D and let her know I got somebody coming to the crib to sit with her. Just in case."

Jordyn did as she was told without asking a single question. The tone in his voice and the seriousness on his face let her know not to. She was afraid of what she’d gotten herself into, but she wouldn’t have had it any other way. If it was Polo, she would’ve had second thoughts. But she was comfortable with Mega. No matter the situation.

“Do you have any kids?” She broke the silence of their drive.

“No.” He frowned. “Why you ask me that?”

“I saw a baby on your girlfriend's page and thought she might be yours.”

“Let me see.”

That wasn’t the first time someone had asked him if he and Mila had any children. He never saw any pictures or heard Mila talk about being pregnant before, so he didn’t think he had any. But shit, he really didn’t put anything past her at that point. If she put a hit out on him, there was no telling what else she was hiding.

“I’ve never seen that baby before," he said. "But you're not the first person to ask me that."

“What if she’s yours?”

“I doubt it," he scoffed. "Apparently, Mila been getting around."

“You don’t know that," Jordyn replied.

“You sound like you want the baby to be mine.”

“No, I don't. But if she is yours, I would want you to know before you do something you’ll regret.

That made a lot of sense to him, but he couldn’t get his mind wrapped around the thought of Mila being pregnant with his child and not telling him.

He just didn't think she would ever keep that kind of secret from him. As much as she may have hated him after everything they’d gone through, if he had gotten her pregnant, he figured she would’ve told him. Strictly for the sake of their relationship.

“Maybe it’s your boyfriend’s baby," he said. "They were still fucking around all this time."

“Possibly.” Jordyn shrugged. “She does favor you, though.”

“Because she’s cute?” He joked.

“Boy! Whatever!" Jordyn laughed. "Have you heard from Layton? I’m worried about my sister.”

Even though the facts weren't officially confirmed, the thought of having a sister was kind of cool to Jordyn. She'd lived her entire life thinking she was an only child, so even though there were a lot of questions that needed to be answered, she was eager to fill in the gaps of her life.

“What if Layton really is your sister for real?” Mega asked. "What's gonna happen between you two? And Pauline?"

“Then we have a lot of catching up to do. My mom has never ever talked about having another child before. It's crazy when I actually think about it."

“Indeed. You missed out on a lot if so," Mega said. "Especially with the business. I know you're not into this kind of shit, but Layton's more than just this life. She's smart and kind. Love's hard. Likes to travel and try new things. She's spontaneous and likes to push people out of their comfort zones. Definitely taught me a lot about myself during this friendship."

After reflecting on his relationship with Layton, Mega dedicated the rest of the drive to his gangster music and caressing Jordyn’s thigh.

She could tell it was putting him in the zone to be comfortable with whatever it was he may have had to do, so she went along with it. However, she was more of an R&B type of chick and she preferred her breasts caressed instead of her thigh. But she let him do whatever made him feel good in the moment.
