CH 22 | MILA'S LAST MISTAKE

Mila's plan to escape goes wrong when her child is kidnapped, and betrayal leads to a deadly showdown with Mega and the Colombians.

Mila had her own agenda at the end of the day. She knew Mega would kill Polo over Layton. Hell, he would've killed HER over Layton. So, she set up a deal with the Columbians to have them both knocked off. The problem was, Mega was still alive. And if they found out that she hadn’t made good on her end of the deal but took their money, she was as good as dead too.

After going back and forth with herself about whether or not to pay someone else to kill Mega, she finally decided to just take the money, get her baby and get out of dodge. That was where she ran into another problem. When she got to the daycare and was told that her child had already been picked up, she snapped.

“Where the fuck is my child!?” She yelled. “How the hell do y’all let somebody who’s not me! Come in here and take my child home! Are you fucking dumb?”

“Ma’am, please, calm down. We’ve contacted the police already. Our sincerest apologies.”

“I don’t want no goddamn apology! I want my child! How do I drop a baby off in the morning and she's not here when I come to pick her up? WHERE IS MY CHILD!”

Mila was pissed. She was the only one on the sign in sheet, so she didn't understand why her baby wasn’t where she left her. Then she thought about it. She got a Facebook notification from Jordyn earlier that day. She figured she was just lurking to see how much better she looked and didn’t think anything of it. But after the mix-up at the daycare, it all made sense.

Jordyn had liked an old picture she forgot to take down and soon after, her baby went missing. Being as street smart as Mila was, she knew the kidnapping had Jordyn’s name written all over it.

Forgetting about the daycare staff and the police being on the way, Mila ran out of the building and headed to her car.

While doing so, she searched Jordyn’s name on Facebook and called her through Messenger. The first couple of calls got no answer, but after a long threatening message, Jordyn finally got the drift and called her back.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah?” Mila gave the phone a disgusting look. “Ain’t no yeah, bitch, NO. I know you have my child and I'ma ask you nicely one time, just one. To bring her back to me. Or me and you, and Mega, are gonna have a real problem. And don’t go blabbing your mouth to him about shit you don’t know about either.”

“Well, well, well.” Jordyn chuckled. “She does have a weakness.”

“Don’t play with me, Jordyn! Do not play with me! Where is my child!?”

Mila felt her blood pressure rising as tears streamed from her eyes. She was so mad she felt like she might pass out. The last thing she wanted was for the bitch who took her man to hear her beg and cry, but about her child, there was nothing she wouldn’t do.

“Please.” She sobbed. “Just bring me my baby back. I will leave y’all alone. Never speak to Mega again, whatever. Just please bring me my baby back.”

“I’ll call you in two hours and tell you where to meet.”

Jordyn ended the call, leaving little room for imagination. She wanted Mila to sweat. She would never hurt a child, but Mila needed to know that she wasn’t untouchable.

Before getting any closer to Mega’s house, she pulled into a nearby gas station to switch off with the baby. She didn’t want Kaylani to know where he lived. Not because she didn’t trust her, but because she could never be too careful.

“Thank you.” She hugged Kaylani, unsure of when she would be able to again. “Just go home and act like nothing ever happened.”

“What if the cops come?”

“Don’t say shit. If anybody asks, you don’t know anything. You can trust your girl to keep her mouth shut, right?”

Kaylani was terrified of the what-ifs. She trusted her homegirl to stay quiet about the plot for sure. But she was afraid of what would happen to her if Mila, or anyone else, knew that she was the one who took the baby.

“Yeah," she said. "I mean, we’ve always been okay with trust and everything. Yeah. She's good. I trust her."

“Alright then. As long as she doesn't talk, we ain’t got nothing to worry about. I’ll bring the money by later.”

“Okay. I’ll keep in touch.”

Mila wanted to kill Jordyn, but she had to give her props. She knew a rider when she saw one. Jordyn reminded her a lot of herself in the beginning of her relationship with Mega. She felt like shit for trying to set him up, though. After all they had been through, he’d never done anything to hurt her and there she was doing him dirty.

The guilt hit her hard when she looked out her rearview mirror and realized there were men following her.

Somehow, word had already gotten out that Mega wasn’t amongst the dead. Mila had $250,000 of the Columbian’s money in her trunk and no one to protect her.

Right then and there, she instantly started to feel like maybe her baby was better off with Jordyn and Mega. She was his daughter, after all.

“This the place right here?” Both Shaun and Mega squinted at the sign on the building where they were meeting the Columbians.

“Yeah.” Mega doubled checked the address on his phone. “It says it’s right here.”

“Alright.” Shaun shrugged. “Let’s go.”

They were greeted at the door by a swole nigga rocking an eye patch. He looked like he was bigger than Shaun, but Big Shaun felt like he could take him if things got out of hand and he had to hem a nigga up real fast.

“Where is he?” The man spewed in a deep, devilish voice.

“In the trunk." Big Shaun stood toe to toe with the man and poked his chest out.

“Alive?”

“For now.”

Without words, the eye-patch rocker widened the doors and let them inside to meet the boss. Mega didn’t know what to expect out of the place they were in.

He’d never seen the Colombian boss in person before, but he'd heard a lot of freaky stories about him and wanted no part in anything he had going on.

“Step in here. The boss will be down shortly."

While they waited for the boss, Mega and Big Shaun scanned the room for anything out of the ordinary. There wasn’t anything, except rainbow flags and posters of sexy-posed men plastered all over the walls.

It looked like a scene from a gay strip club. And while Mega had a million questions running through his mind about it, Big Shaun couldn't help but laugh.

“What’s with all the gay shit?” Shaun asked.

“Shit, I’m wondering the same thing.”

Just as the words left his lips, in walked the boss. A sassy, Columbian pretty boy. Mega expected to see a middle-aged, short gangster in a suit or something.

Instead, he was given a clean shaven, oiled up, Latino heat looking motherfucker in skinny jeans and a sequined blouse.

“Um.” Mega squinted to make sure he was seeing correctly. “You...you’re the boss?”

“I’m standing right in front of you, aren’t I?” The man sassed.

“Uh.” Mega looked around the room at the men he had protecting him for confirmation.

“Where’s the man?” The boss snapped his fingers. “Bring him to me.”

After sharing another confused look with Big Shaun, Mega replied, “He’s in the trunk.”

“The trunk!?" The Latino gangster squealed. "What kind of rideshare is that? What seems to be the problem here?”

“Your hitman is the problem," Mega said. "He turned on Layton. And she's supposed to be his daughter."

Latino heat fluttered his eyes like he had to refresh his own memory. He also couldn't keep his eyes off Mega. He looked like he'd fallen in love and would do anything to keep Mega happy. But Mega didn't swing that way, so he treaded lightly.

"Layton? The cute one? The stud girl?”

“Yeah," Mega confirmed. "He also has a vendetta against someone I know and I need him to let it go. I don’t think he’s the type, so I wanted to pass it through you before I killed him.”

“Killed him?” The boss stood up from his chair with the seed of lust planted deep in his eyes and walked straight up to Mega. “You’re a man who knows what he wants, I see. And you’re determined to get it, respectfully." He gently ran a fingernail down Mega’s chest. “And you’re not afraid of the gays. AND! Ugh!” He dramatically held his hand up to his heart. “Someone get this man away from me before I fall in love for myself.”

“What the fuck?” Big Shaun mouthed to Mega, who had to cover his mouth to keep from laughing.

“So, uh,” Mega cleared his throat, “is that an okay to kill him?”

“Don’t worry, Pa-Pa.” The boss flicked his wrist at Mega. “For you I will kill him myself.”
